POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to Operations Management, the Assistant Director-Shipping is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising all daily warehouse activities, from receiving through shipping. The successful candidate ensures operational efficiency, inventory accuracy, compliance with health and safety requirements, and achievement of performance objectives.
Working closely with Production, Logistics, Purchasing, Sales, Customer Service, and Engineering teams, the Warehouse Manager contributes to process optimization, cost control, and continuous improvement while ensuring team engagement and development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations and Performance Management
- Plan, organize, and supervise daily warehouse activities, including receiving, storage, order picking, packaging, staging, loading, and shipping.
- Ensure effective coordination with Customer Service to meet operational needs and priorities.
- Work with the Engineering team to establish productivity indicators and monitor service, quality, and accuracy expectations.
- Monitor key performance indicators, including productivity, order accuracy, shipping lead times, service quality, operational errors, labour costs, and overtime.
- Identify operational issues, bottlenecks, and recurring errors and implement corrective actions to improve processes.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to productivity, cost control, safety, and employee engagement.
Inventory and Systems Management
- Ensure disciplined and accurate transactions within ERP/WMS systems, including inventory movements, location accuracy, order closing, and operational data integrity.
- Supervise inventory control activities, including cycle counts, inventory discrepancies, internal audits, and loss prevention.
- Implement and follow up on corrective actions related to inventory discrepancies and losses.
- Conduct daily warehouse and production floor walks to ensure products are properly received, identified, staged, and stored.
- Ensure compliance with procedures related to damaged products, returns, non-conforming products, customer orders, and special handling requirements.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Lead weekly meetings with the Health and Safety Committee and follow up on health and safety issues with the team.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies, health and safety requirements, equipment-use procedures, and applicable standards.
- Ensure proper operational readiness for audits and inspections.
- Ensure that forklifts, pallet jacks, loading dock doors, and other material handling equipment are properly maintained and used safely.
- Identify risks and implement the necessary corrective measures to maintain a safe work environment.
Resource Management and Leadership
- Plan staffing requirements, schedules, overtime needs, and resource allocation based on workload and operational priorities.
- Coach, train, and support supervisors and employees to ensure compliance with procedures, daily performance, and skills development.
- Organize monthly meetings with both shifts to communicate company updates, safety topics, and quality priorities.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, respect, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Engage teams around operational objectives and ensure rigorous performance follow-up.
Optimization and Cost Control
- Monitor warehouse space utilization and optimize the layout to facilitate work, improve safety, and maximize operational efficiency.
- Control costs related to labour, equipment, supplies, losses, processing errors, and process improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with Logistics, Production, Purchasing, Sales, and Customer Service teams to align warehouse priorities with business needs.
PROFILE WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Relevant experience in warehouse management, logistics, distribution, or operations within a high-volume environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing teams, including supervising supervisors, team leaders, or employees across different shifts.
- Strong knowledge of ERP/WMS systems and ability to ensure the accuracy of transactions, inventory movements, and operational data.
- Strong understanding of operational performance indicators, including productivity, order accuracy, customer service, inventory, safety, costs, and overtime.
- Good knowledge of occupational health and safety practices, inspections, audits, safe equipment operation, and corrective measures.
- Ability to analyze problems, identify root causes, and implement concrete action plans with rigorous follow-up.
- Structured leadership style with the ability to motivate teams, communicate expectations clearly, and hold employees accountable for results.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with internal teams, Customer Service, Production, Purchasing, Sales, and logistics partners.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, changing, and results-oriented environment.
- Bilingualism in French and English is considered an asset, depending on operational needs and communication with customers or suppliers.
